Description

To the Editor: In the early part of the 20th century, Europe--Germany, in particular--was considered to be the epicenter of biomedical science, and pharmaceuticals were the province of the chemical industry. At the outset of WWII, President Roosevelt turned urgently to Vannevar Bush, an eminent scientist who later headed Merck, and asked him to gather America's best and brightest scientists to aid the war effort; antibiotics and other life-saving drugs were needed desperately. Academic and industry scientists responded, and the results were outstanding. At the conclusion of the war, under the Alien Property Custodian Act, several German chemical companies became "American" companies, and from them, the pharmaceutical industry was created. Max Tishler left Harvard to head Merck research, initiating collaborations with academic and government scientists that set new standards and became a model for the global industry we know today. And subsequently, America began its ascendancy to world leader in pharmaceutical discovery.
